<description><![CDATA[ <p style="text-align: justify;">Defining leadership is not easy. In fact, there are various approaches and concepts in explaining what is leadership and what it implies (Northouse, 2001). One such definition is that it is an influence that brings about creating a vision for the future, designing shapes to culture and values, inspiring and motivating subordinates, developing leadership qualities and creating change to enhance organizational effectiveness (Daft, 2002). In another concept, leadership constitutes service for others where leaders should be willing to give direction, build teams, and inspire others by example (Adair, 2006).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />It is evident that there are other numerous definitions that can be associated with the term &lsquo;leadership.&rsquo; However, leadership is often reflected in behavior which determines whether leaders are fulfilling their role successfully or not (Meneses, 2003). Such behavior or the so-called &lsquo;leadership behavior&rsquo; can be observed in leaders&rsquo; ability to plan, organize, direct, control their members and other leaders in the attainment of a well-defined goal (Nietes, 1978). These behavioral interactions by the leader enhance his relationship with his subordinates (Hazeur, 2008).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />The leadership behavior in organizations may demonstrate the beginning of a professional development to improve leadership skills (Warner, 2008). This could also be observed in student associations which are officially affiliated within a university as they provide various programs and activities to other students (Meyer, 2008).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />Within these organizations, student leadership is found. It is defined as an engagement of active learning with diverse ideas in school organizations. It remains to be an essential element of students&rsquo; exposure and development (Hazeur, 2008). It is also associated with service to others through the challenges in student organizations which transform activities into learning experience (Caruso et. al., 2006).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />In a study conducted by De La Salle University-Manila (DLSU-M), the school values the importance of student leadership so that its pupils may enhance the aspects of their moral and personal growth (Santos, 1997) as they integrate value formation (Suplido, 1969). Also, Lasallians were able to define leadership qualities with the five leadership dimensions namely personal, rational skills and abilities, moral ethical, and task-orientation (Alejandrino, et. al., 2000).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />Despite the multiple facets of leadership, there is a need to advance student leadership literature within the context of the school&rsquo;s student population. For this research, the author would like to describe and analyze student leadership behavior in the top performing student professional organizations of DLSU-M.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />This thesis will adapt the reformulated path-goal theory of work unit leadership which specifies eight classifications of leadership behaviors (House, 1996). However, it is not possible to engage in all behaviors since effective leaders only select those behaviors which are suited to their personality and abilities.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />The path-goal theory is very relevant to this thesis since it narrates leadership relations. Specifically, the approach can be observed between leaders and members or in the relationship between executive officers and members. Being student leaders, executive officers have to develop behavior that will motivate the performance of their members, thus, enhancing executive officers and student members&rsquo; work relations.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />Who are student leaders? Student leaders are elected executive officers found in recognized student professional organizations in DLSU-M (Alejandrino et. al., 2000) while members pertain to Lasallian students who are active in any of the recognized professional organizations of the said university.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />As for literature, research have been devoted recently to leadership behavior of corporate officers, politicians, school administrators, principals, and other leaders but little has been done which focuses on concepts related to student leadership behavior.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />Even previous studies on student leadership which centered on De La Salle student councils dated February 1969, May 1987, November 1987 and August 2000 offers limited literature. To address this lack of data, studies about student leadership must experience a continuing development.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />It is in this light that this research will focus on student leadership behavior in professional students&rsquo; organizations in De La Salle University. Thus, the author is inspired to pursue this research.<br /><br /><strong>Leader Behaviors</strong><br />This theory specifies eight classifications of leader behaviors. They are independent variables with one another. In addition, propositions refer to discussions, illustrations, principles or conditions which are included to every leader behavior (House, 1996). These behaviors are as follows:</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br /><em>Path-Goal Clarifying Behaviors</em><br />This behavior clarifies subordinates&rsquo; target goals. Among the conditions are (a) clarifying subordinates performance goals, (b) clarifying means by which subordinates can effectively carry out tasks, (c) clarifying standards by which subordinates&rsquo; performance will be judged, (d) clarifying expectations to subordinates&rsquo; responsibilities, and (e) showing action through rewards or concerns in their performance. Thus:</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Proposition 1: Path-goal clarifying behavior will motivate subordinates since they will find fulfillment when tasks are clarified by the leaders.</li>
<li>Proposition 2: Path-goal clarifying behavior is acceptable when subordinates are able to perceive their ability to task demands or urgent work.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</li>
<li>Proposition 3: Path-goal clarifying behavior will not be motivational when task demands of subordinates are not clear and not satisfying. </li>
<li>Proposition 4: Participative leadership will encourage positive effect to subordinates&rsquo; satisfaction and motivation when they are capable to handle decision making or task demands.</li>
<li>Proposition 5: Participative leadership behavior can be motivational to subordinates with low or strong preference for independence and self-direction.</li>
<li>Proposition 6: Leader&rsquo;s behavior can not be predicted from the theory when subordinates are under the condition of confusion or uncertainty.</li>
<li>Achievement Oriented Leader Behavior</li>
<li>This behavior does not only focus on performance or on target goals of the organization but also for work and self-evaluation based on personal accomplishment. Thus:</li>
<li>Proposition 7: Achievement oriented leader behavior will be effective when subordinates have the responsibility and control over their work.</li>
<li>Proposition 8: Achievement-oriented leader behavior will be effective when subordinates are highly achievement motivated.</li>
<li>Proposition 9: Achievement-oriented leader behavior will be effective when subordinates improve performance and commitment to highly achievement motivated subordinates.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;">&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Work Facilitation</em><br />This behavior facilitates the work necessary to perform effectively which is dependent on the degree to how technology is understood and the work demands are predictable. Thus:</p>
<ul>
<li>Proposition 10: When the work of the unit are predictable, leader planning, scheduling, organizing, and the establishment of formal structure will facilitate the work of the unit subordinates if there is technological certainty.</li>
<li>Proposition 11: Leaders should be able to coordinate effectively to the level of ability with suited skill, knowledge, and experience to work unit subordinates.</li>
<li>Proposition 12: Leaders should be able to enhance work unit effectiveness especially in cases which subordinates lack task knowledge and experience.</li>
<li>Proposition 13: Leaders should be able to reduce difficulties faced by subordinates who lack relevant knowledge and experience to facilitate work unit accomplishment.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;">&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Supportive Leader Behavior&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</em><br />This behavior provides support to subordinates especially during conditions in which tasks or relationships are physically distressing or when there are conflicts among each other. Thus:</p>
<ul>
<li>Proposition 14: Supportive leader behavior enhances subordinate relationship, self- confidence, lowering stress and anxiety to avoid environment which could be dangerous, monotonous, stressful or frustrating.</li>
<li>Proposition 15: Supportive leader behavior will have little effect on follower satisfaction, motivation or performance when tasks are satisfying or environment is not stressful.</li>
<li>Interaction Facilitation</li>
<li>This behavior facilitates collaborative and positive interaction in resolving differences, facilitating communication, giving the minority a chance to be heard, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and teamwork, and encouraging close satisfying relationships among subordinates. Thus:</li>
<li>&nbsp;Proposition 16: Leader behavior is directed towards the interaction which will increase work unit unity and coordination.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;">&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Group Oriented Decision Process</em><br />Group decision making is a special case of participative leadership requiring some leader skills that are different from participative leadership between superiors and subordinates. Thus:</p>
<ul>
<li>Proposition 17: Group decision process will enhance decision quality and decision acceptance when mutual interests among work unit subordinates is observed.</li>
<li>Proposition 18: Group decision process will enhance subordinates&rsquo; approval or acceptance to implement collective decision.</li>
<li>Proposition 19: Group decision process will enhance if subordinates have expertise relevant to the technical or economic quality of decisions.</li>
<li>Proposition 20: A mutual interest in making effective decisions exists or can be established among the subordinates involved (as expressed on propositions 17, 18, and 19).</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;">&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Representation and Networking &nbsp;</em><br />The ability of work units to acquire necessary resources depends on the influence within the organization and recognition in the subordinates. Thus:</p>
<ul>
<li>Proposition 21: Work unit recognition and ability to influence will be enhanced by active representation and networking by determined work unit leaders. </li>
<li>Proposition 22:&nbsp; Leaders will have more favorable and positive effects to work unit with relatively lower inter-organizational influence.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;">&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Value Based Leader Behavior </em><br />This behavior articulates vision for a better future, displays passion for the vision, and demonstrates confidence since there is determination in the interests to attain the vision. Thus:</p>
<ul>
<li>Proposition 23: Leaders should be able to communicate vision in the moral involvement and internalized values of work unit subordinates. &nbsp;</li>
<li>Proposition 24:&nbsp; Leaders should reinforce to guide behavior and provide incentives for specific performance.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</li>
<li>Proposition 25: Leaders should integrate value based vision to generate positive relationship between leaders and subordinates.</li>
